The Birth of Enterprise PHP

Posted on | December 1, 2008 |

You here and read things like this:

PHP is ready for the enterprise

almost daily the last few months. I have some second thoughts on this: I don’t think PHP is ready for the enterprise right now, in my opinion this was allready the case when PHP 5 was released (2004) and maybe even before that. Yahoo! adopted PHP for major development tracks in 2002. They were ‘enterprise’ sized at that time if I remember correctly.

Maybe it is the other way around: enterprises are ready for PHP. On the customer side: companies are opening up for Open Source technology for a while now, even the beloved Java has gone Open Source. And even more important, we are ready for Enterprise demands on the supply side too. In general, companies focusing on delivering solutions based on PHP are getting better organised, deliver better quality products and grow in size themselves. That’s why, in my opinion, we hear that mantra more and more the last 12 months.
